Summary
Agosto Mauro, Rythm and Melos in byzantine hymnography.
Based on the old sources and the textual evidence, this paper’s author deals with Rhythm in Byzantine chant. He provides a historical overview of the development of the rhythmical synthesis and considers the elementary rhythmic patterns of both kontakia and kanons. He also tries to frame the relationship between rhythm and the tonic accent within the musical phrase as it can be recovered from the manuscript monuments of Byzantine notation in order to discover rhythm’s relations both with the melody and neumes, and also with the tonic accentuation of Greek words.
